The Call
After the April 18, 2026 hail storm, this Turtle Rock Estates homeowner in Northwest Austin needed a roof replacement through his insurance claim. He wasn’t looking for just any roofer. He wanted a highly rated IBHS FORTIFIED Certified Roofing Contractor, so the hail replacement could also be an upgrade to the FORTIFIED Roof™ standard.
What We Found
Our inspection found hail damage across the entire roof and on the roof accessories. The damage wasn’t limited to one slope, so a full replacement was needed.
What We Installed
We tore off the old roof down to the deck and re-nailed the decking with ring-shank nails at 4 inches on center, so the deck stays attached in high winds. Next we sealed the deck with two layers of synthetic underlayment, one of the approved FORTIFIED methods for keeping water out if shingles are ever lost in a storm. Owens Corning WeatherLock® Mat went into the valleys and around every roof penetration. Owens Corning Starter Strip was fully adhered at the eaves and rakes with roof cement, as the FORTIFIED standard requires.
The new roof is Owens Corning TruDefinition® Duration® shingles in Onyx Black, rated UL 2218 Class 3 for impact resistance, finished with Owens Corning RIZERidge® hip and ridge. We replaced the vents with GAF Master Flow® dome vents, installed lead pipe flashings, and fabricated custom 24-gauge black Kynar-coated drip edge to match.
The crew completed the full 38-square roof in one day.
Why FORTIFIED
FORTIFIED is a construction standard from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). It targets the ways roofs fail in storms: decking pulling loose, and water getting in once shingles blow off. A FORTIFIED roof is inspected and documented by a third-party evaluator before the designation is issued.

The roof was completed in August 2026 and received its FORTIFIED Roof™ designation in September 2026.
